What is Organic?

Organic produce refers to fruits and vegetables that are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or artificial additives. Organic farming relies on natural processes to enhance soil fertility, control pests, and promote plant health, often using methods like composting, crop rotation, and natural pest control. Organic produce is certified by regulatory bodies to ensure it meets these specific farming practices.

How is Organic Produce Certified?

To obtain organic certification under the National Organic Program (NOP) in the United States (as well as Canada, the EU, Japan, Korea, as well as those applicable in the countries of origin), a farm or business must adhere to strict guidelines designed to ensure that products are produced using organic methods. This process begins with understanding the NOP’s standards, which cover everything from soil health to pest management, prohibiting the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and GMOs.

If the farm has previously used conventional methods, it must undergo a three-year transition period during which the land is managed according to organic standards without using any prohibited substances. If the operation then meets all necessary standards, the certifying agent will grant organic certification, allowing the products to be labeled with the USDA organic seal. This certification is not a one-time process but requires annual renewal. This rigorous process ensures that consumers can trust the organic label on certified products.

Dole Organic

Dole's organic growing practices are aligned with the principles of organic agriculture, refraining from any use of synthetic crop protection products and fertilizers, instead relying on natural methods to maintain soil fertility and pest control. These methods include the use of compost, and various soil conservation programs to enhance its health and prevent erosion. Crop protection is achieved through biological controls, such as introducing beneficial insects and utilizing natural predators to keep harmful pests in check for example.

Dole also prioritizes good water management and the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity on its organic farms, ensuring that we minimize the impact of our farming activities.

Why Choose Dole Organic Produce?

Shoppers today have ever-increasing expectations for both suppliers and retailers to reflect their cares and values reflected in store offerings – including environmental sustainability, climate mitigation, health and wellness, social issues and food security and safety.

With more than 25 years of organic banana program experience, Dole has integrated these ideals into the forefront of its business and incorporated some of its experience learned from organics into its conventional farming operations too.

Yet, we are not complacent, continuing to learn and be a part of the vibrant organic community. We strive to push forward organic farming and continuously improve quality and availability of organic fruit & vegetables.
