7 reasons to make soup your go-to recipe

When the cold weather rolls in, trade your salad plate for a soup bowl.  You’ll gain comfort, satisfaction, and a lot of nutrition.

Here are a few reasons to enjoy a bowl of soup today:

1.     Soup makes eating vegetables easy!  Whether chopped or blended, consuming vegetables is easy when they are cooked down with your favorite protein and seasonings.  Use up fresh items that need to be used quickly such as prechopped onion, carrot slices, leafy greens such as spinach or arugula.

2.     Soup is a meal that doubles as hydration.  Meeting fluid requirements is important all year round, one can easily become dehydrated when the weather is cool and the temperature cue to drink is gone.  The beauty of soup is that they are mostly liquid, so they are a great way to supplement daily beverage intake.

3.     Soup can halt hunger!  Research suggests that having soup before a meal can help you feel more satisfied with that meal.

4.     Soup may lower risk for obesity.  One epidemiological study suggests that soup eaters are more likely to have lower risk of obesity, lower waist circumference and tend to have lower overall calorie intake.

5.     Soup makes you feel well, when ill!  A warm bowl of soup is easy to consume when you don’t feel like eating much, and if made with vegetables can provide a hefty dose of vitamins and minerals to support your immune system too.

6.     Soups are easy to batch cook.  Go ahead, double your favorite recipe, and then freeze in individual portion containers to enjoy later.  Keep a few in the fridge to have ready for a quick grab and go meal prepped lunch.

7.     Soups are economical.  They can be made from anything, and usually the base is made from items which are typically discarded – think chicken bones, cheese rinds, vegetable skins and herb stems!
