Stay Cool Strategies
Beyond air conditioning
When summer temperatures climb the number one way to find relief is with indoor air conditioning– but there is more you can do! Here are a few stay cool strategies to avoid becoming sweaty, cranky, crampy and downright uncomfortable.
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. When body temperature rises, the sweat glands are triggered to release perspiration which evaporates from the skin, cooling down our bodies. We need to be well hydrated for this process to work! Drink non-caffeinated beverages such as unsweet teas and infused waters consistently throughout the day.
- Foods can hydrate too! Some foods have higher water content than others and fruits and vegetables. Pineapple, cucumber, celery, berries, citrus, greens, and melons are just a few to keep in mind.
- Vitamins, Minerals and Electrolytes to keep in the mix.
- Sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium are just a few electrolytes that charge the body and guide water to where it needs to go! Without them, muscles could feel weak or even cramp up. Fruits and vegetables like bananas, broccoli, spinach, kale, plantains, prunes and melons are just a few sources of electrolytes.
- Instant gratification with a cold treat! Try these fruit-based pops for a treat where you can control the added sugar! Depending on how ripe your fruit is, you may be able to omit the sugar all together!
- Here’s to hydration! Blend up a Refresh-ing beverage if the thought of lifting a fork is just too much to bear! Cheers!
