Potassium Especially for Women
Blood pressure improvements
Bananas, potatoes and spinach are natural sources of potassium, a powerful and effective mineral when it comes to heart health. In fact, a recent study published in the European Heart Journal suggests that women in particular benefit more from potassium’s blood pressure lowering effect than men do.
Researchers analyzed nearly 25,000 men and women including general health information, blood pressure and history of cardiovascular (CV) events. They measured potassium and sodium intake using 24-hour urine analysis and found that as potassium intake increased, blood pressure decreased for women, while no such relationship was observed for men. However, during the 20-year follow-up, they found that both men and women with the highest potassium intake had a 13% lower risk of CV disease, suggesting that potassium has other ways of protecting the heart, above and beyond sodium excretion.
One of the best ways to increase your potassium intake is by eating five servings of fruits and vegetables while incorporating legumes, low-fat dairy, nuts and seeds daily.
