The journey to acquiring the certified organic label begins with land selection. As with bananas, the land for our organic pineapples must be free from synthetic pesticide applications for a minimum of three years. Dole's organic growing practices refrain from any use of synthetic crop protection products or fertilizers, instead relying on natural methods to maintain soil fertility and pest control. These methods include the use of compost from pineapple byproducts, and various soil conservation programs to enhance its health and prevent erosion. Crop protection is achieved through biological controls, such as introducing beneficial insects and utilizing natural predators to keep harmful pests in check or pest solutions made from garlic and hot peppers. All of this fosters a healthy ecosystem and environmentally responsible practices.

To keep our crops safe from harmful diseases and pests, such as the phytophthora fungus, we use a variety of approved organic methods. Techniques like hand-weeding and the use of specialized tools for weed management minimize environmental impact. Each step of the production—from planting to packing—is monitored by trained specialists to ensure compliance with strict organic standards. We also provide comprehensive training for independent growers, backed by third-party audits, ensuring that every Dole organic product meets the high-quality standards that we stand for.
