How Organic Certification Works for Bananas

How Organic Certification Works for Bananas

What it means for bananas

Organic produce has become a staple for health- or environmentally-conscious consumers, and bananas are no exception. But what does it take for a banana to earn the coveted "certified organic" label? At Dole, we take pride in our Certified Organic Banana Program, ensuring that each step from planting to packing meets the highest standards of quality. Here's a closer look at how organic certification works and what it means for your favorite fruit.

To be labeled as certified organic, bananas must meet stringent production standards set by regulatory bodies in the U.S., Canada, the EU, Japan, Korea, as well as those applicable in the countries of origin. This involves a comprehensive process that ensures the bananas are grown and processed in environmentally friendly ways using farming methods that promote soil health, enhanced biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or artificial additives.

At Dole, we have developed successful organic production methods on our own farms in Ecuador as well as sourcing from independent organic growers located in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador.

Our organic bananas are planted on land that hasn't been exposed to agricultural chemicals for at least three years. We focus on improving soil fertility through natural methods including the use of minerals and natural fertilizers to provide essential nutrients.

Organic agriculture at Dole also involves enhancing biological cycles for natural insect and disease control. For example, Dole bananas are typically grown in dry, warm climates, which naturally protects our crops against pests and diseases, such as sigatoka, a leaf spot disease that can drastically reduce fruit yields. Weeds are removed manually rather than with chemicals, ensuring that the ecosystem remains balanced and healthy.

From planting to packing, each step of production is carefully monitored by a team of trained specialists. We implement Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) to optimize crop yields while protecting the environment. Additionally, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) are applied at every packing station on our organic farms, following FDA guidelines to ensure quality and regulatory compliance.

Dole independent growers receive comprehensive training in organic farming practices, and their compliance is annually audited by third-party certifiers. This collaborative effort ensures that all DOLE® Organic Bananas meet the high standards required for organic certification.

Dole is an industry leader in researching soil fertility, biological disease, and insect controls. We continually investigate and implement safe and innovative methods to protect our crops, ensuring that our customers receive the very best organic bananas grown in a responsible and sustainable manner.

At Dole, we have been committed to providing our customers with the highest quality organic bananas for more than 25 years. Through our Certified Organic Banana Program, we ensure that every step of the production process adheres to strict standards, from planting to packing. By choosing DOLE® Organic Bananas, you are not only supporting your health but also contributing to a more sustainable world.
