Holiday Break
It may be time to schedule yours
As the holidays approach, it often feels like there's never enough time to juggle work, personal life, family obligations, and all the tasks that come with the season. If you find yourself struggling, research suggests it might be time to strike a balance between long hours at work and a well-deserved break. In fact, scheduling a holiday break could be crucial for supporting heart health and preventing dire conditions like heart disease or stroke.
According to a study published in The Lancet, working long hours of overtime has been linked to an increased risk of these adverse health conditions. European researchers analyzed data from 25 studies conducted across Europe, the United States, and Australia. The findings showed that individuals working 55 hours or more per week had a 1.3-times higher risk of stroke and a 1.13-times higher risk of developing heart disease compared to those working a standard 35-40 hour week.
An even more recent 2021 study published in Environment International reinforces this idea, concluding that working 55 hours or more per week is associated with an estimated 35% higher risk of stroke and a 17% higher risk of dying from ischemic heart disease, compared to working 35-40 hours a week.
During the holiday season and throughout the year, it is crucial to strike a balance between work and personal life. Make the most of this time by taking a break from work and spending quality time with your loved ones. Additionally, make use of any workplace wellness programs or opportunities that your company offers to ensure your health stays on track. At Dole, for example, we offer health and wellness inspired lunch-and-learn workshops, have an onsite gym, as well as complimentary fruit snacks available throughout the day.
As a bonus, exercising regularly can help you stay focused in the office. Research suggests that regular exercise improves oxygen circulation in the brain, potentially leading to a sharper mind and better focus. This can help you complete your work efficiently and leave the office on time.
