Health for Gamers

Health for Gamers

Common concerns and tips for staying healthy!

Did you know that more than 212 million people in the U.S. are playing video games?  In fact, many spend over eight hours per day playing on tablets, phones, TV’s and consoles! And if this includes you, you already know how easy it is to get immersed in your favorite digital world. But it's important to remember to take care of your health. Take a break with us to go over some common topics to keep you feeling your best while playing your favorite video games.

First, let's talk about sitting for long periods of time. When gaming, it's easy to get lost in the action and forget to take breaks. However, sitting for hours at a time can lead to poor posture, back pain, and decreased circulation. That’s why the CDC recommends that adults move more and sit less, and get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. So, make sure to stand up (even when playing) and stretch every hour or so and make daily activity a priority to gain the mind, body, and overall health benefits of physical activity.

In addition to headaches, blurry vision and dry eyes, the American Optometric Association explains that one of the most common eye health concerns for gamers is eye strain, which is caused by staring at a screen for too long. One way to combat this is to try the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Blinking frequently, stopping play at least an hour before bed and staying hydrated with plenty of water. Enjoying hydrating fruits such as berries, oranges and pineapples are other ways to help reduce eye strain and keep your eyes healthy.

Lastly, let's talk about food. When gaming, it's easy to reach for chips, candy, and soda. While these snacks may be tasty, they're considered ultra-processed foods and they’re not doing your body any favors. Instead, try to incorporate healthier options into your gaming setup. Foods like fruits, veggies, nuts, and whole grains can give you the energy you need to sustain optimal gaming without causing a crash later.

If you're looking for some recipe ideas, here are a few to get you started:

·      Trail mix: Combine nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and dark chocolate for a tasty and energizing snack.

·      Veggie sticks and hummus: Cut up carrots, celery, and bell pepper and dip into some homemade hummus. Our “Un-Charcuterie” Platter may be just what you’re looking for.

·      DOLE® Banana Energy Bites: Mix together bananas, dates and oats with peanut butter, flax and chia for a balanced and satisfying snack.

Remember, taking care of your body is just as important as taking care of your gaming setup. So, stretch, rest your eyes, and fuel up with healthy snacks for happy gaming!
