Barbecuing fruit: our Top 4 taste particularly good
Summer time is barbecue time! If you feel like something light, refreshing and healthy at the barbecue, fruit could be the answer. Whether you are looking for a fruity side dish, a salad topping or a sweet dessert at the end, our Top 4 fruits all work particularly well on the grill.
Pineapple
For best results on the grill, remove the core of the pineapple and cut it into slices. Seasoned with some pepper, barbecued pineapple is the perfect accompaniment to chicken or prawns, and adds a fruity and exotic flavour to your barbecue dish.
Peaches
These small, sweet fruits are not just great when grilled, stuffed peaches are also delicious. For a light and tasty dessert, simply halve the fruit, remove the stone and grill the peach on the cut side. The hollowed-out peaches can then be filled with cottage cheese, low-fat quark or yoghurt and drizzled with honey.
Water melon
It might sound unusual but the popular summer fruit tastes particularly aromatic when it is grilled. Simply cut the water melon into slices 2 cm thick and cook them for a few minutes on either side. Enjoy straight from the barbecue.
Pears
Simply cut the pears into slices and barbecue them with some pepper and rosemary. Serve the warm pear slices with a green salad and some blue cheese or feta – the perfect fruity side salad!
Our tips for barbecuing fruit: To prevent the fruit from getting too hot, place it in an aluminium dish or on some foil on the edge of the grill. A delicious alternative is to thread a selection of fruit onto a wooden skewer and place directly on the grill.
