March is National Nutrition Month

What you need to know in 2024

March is National Nutrition Month, a time to focus on making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits. This year's theme is "Beyond the Table," which encourages a deeper understanding of the food we eat and how it gets from farm to fork. Here are four areas to focus on this month:

Stay nourished on any budget.

Nutrition isn't just for the wealthy. You can eat healthily on a budget by learning simple cooking techniques, and by building meal planning skills. Using a grocery list and shopping sales can help you save money while still eating nutritious foods. Don't forget to explore community resources like SNAP, WIC, and local food banks for additional support. Finally, practice home food safety to reduce unnecessary waste and prevent foodborne illnesses that keeps your meals safe to eat.

See a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

If you have specific nutrition concerns or health goals, consider working with an RDN. They can provide personalized nutrition information to help you meet your goals and find ways to live a healthier life. Ask your doctor for a referral, or search for an RDN who specializes in your unique needs. Bonus:  Many Registered Dietitians are active on social media so this could be a good place to look for someone.  Follow us @dolepics on Instagram to get to know our in-house dietitian, Melanie Marcus.

Eat a variety of foods from all food groups.

Eating a variety of foods ensures that you get all the nutrients your body needs. Include your favorite cultural foods and traditions, and be sure to eat foods in various forms, including fresh, frozen, canned, and dried. Try experimenting with recipes that use different ingredients and try new foods or global cuisines to keep things interesting.

Eat with the environment in mind.

Taking care of the environment is key to a sustainable future. Reduce food waste by finding creative ways to use leftovers and enjoy more plant-based meals and snacks. Try to buy foods in season when possible. And if you have the space, consider growing some food at home or in a community garden. Herbs and tomatoes are a great place to start!

National Nutrition Month is the perfect time to reflect on your eating habits and make changes that benefit both yourself and the planet. By focusing on the four areas above, you can build a nutritious, sustainable, and enjoyable way of eating. Happy National Nutrition Month!
