Brainberries | Micronutrients in strawberries help with memory
As America celebrates another trip around the sun, complete with flag cakes topped with berries of red and blue, new research suggests that strawberries can be an asset when it comes to fending off cognitive decline that may affect us as we age.
This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study worked with 37 older men and women, providing them with the equivalent of 2 cups of fresh strawberries for 90 days, while recording their cognitive skills through a variety of tests. After completing an array of assessments, researchers observed that those who consumed the strawberries daily, performed better on both memory and recognition tests when compared to those who did not eat the fruit! These findings are in line with other publications that suggest flavonoids, (like those found in strawberries), contribute to a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease and Related Dementias.
