Unlock nutrition from a variety of sources!

We have all seen the boom in “superfoods”, like chia seeds, goji berries and quinoa, in recent years. They are said to be particularly healthy thanks to their antioxidant and fiber properties, but did you know that some of the old reliable foods in your kitchen can be just as good? Local superfoods are generally less expensive too! Take a look at our 5 best superfood alternatives that you should know.

1. Blueberries instead of açai berries:  Anthocyanins are blue plant pigments that protect us from damaging oxidation processes. The exotic açai berries became famous for their anthocyanin content. But the well-known blueberry is also a great source of this healthy compound! Other blue and purple fruits and vegetables, such as elderberries and grapes, are also rich in anthocyanin.

2. Cabbage instead of camu camu:  The camu camu sour berry is considered to be a superfood, thanks to is rich levels of vitamins B and C. A native of the Amazon region, it is touted for its immune boosting properties. But watch out – an unassuming vegetable is an unlikely competitor. Various members of the cabbage family, such as kale or white cabbage, also have plenty of vitamin C on board. This superfood alternative is also rich in fiber, iron and calcium – and can easily be enjoyed raw unlike camu camu which is often too sour for most people and instead, consumed in powdered form.

3. Millet instead of quinoa:  They are both small, crunchy grains – but millet and quinoa have even more in common. They are both excellent sources of protein and iron. This makes them a good choice for vegetarians and vegans. They are also both gluten-free. It’s up to you which of these two superfoods you choose. One thing is clear: millet is an ideal superfood alternative to quinoa.

4. Blackcurrants instead of goji berries:  Blackcurrants actually contain three times more vitamin C than goji berries. They are also just as versatile as their superfood competitors. Blackcurrants and goji berries taste good in warm morning oats, salads or in baked goods.

5. Flax seeds instead of chia seeds:  Are your packets of flax seeds gathering dust in the cupboard because chia seeds are ostensibly much healthier? That’s not actually true, as flax seeds are a fantastic superfood alternative to chia seeds. Both contain lots of protein and omega-3 fatty acids and both will keep you nicely full thanks to their fiber content. Which is your favorite?
