What's in a Name?

The true meaning of the name “Strawberry,” is somewhat contested by historians. Popular folklore relates that children used sell their berries at the market, and to make trading easier, they would string them together with threads of straw, hence Straw-Berry! A similar account is that farmers used to lay their fresh berry harvest in straw to protect it during transport.
Others believe that the name comes from the Strawberry plant having runners, or stems that are strewn on the ground around the plant, which gave rise to the name “Strewn Berry.” While the origin of the word is contested, it is known that the current spelling of the name is a modernization of the Old English, “Streawberige.”
So while there may be a history that’s unclear, and an ancient name that’s hard to pronounce, one thing’s for sure; whatever the name, or the history, DOLE® Strawberry’s amazing taste rings true!
